The Whistleblower

A web of conspiracies and apparent links between a clean energy plan and a disaster in Africa are woven together in the thriller The Whistleblower. Helmed by Xue Xiaolu (Ocean Heaven, Finding Mr. Right), who is considered to be China’s foremost female director, the film stars Tang Wei (Lust, Caution), Lei Jiayin (The First Half of My Life) and Qi Xi (Bitter Flowers).

An earthquake strikes Malawi and Australian firm Eco Energy sends a rescue team. Meanwhile, in Australia Eco Energy is celebrating a collaboration with the Chinese Han Coal Group on a clean energy plan. There, Chinese expatriate Mark (Lei) runs into his former lover Wen (Tang) who is now married to the chairman of Han Coal. Wen flies off the next day but soon after Mark is devastated to discover that her plane has crashed. Two weeks later Mark learns that Wen is actually alive, having failed to catch the flight.  But it appears she wishes to remain under the radar fearing that her knowledge of her husband’s shady business dealings – and possible links between the energy plan and the earthquake – have put her in extreme danger.
