Director Kazuya Shiraishi is one of the most prolific of Japan’s new generation auteurs and made a name for himself in depicting the topics of senseless violence and madness in Birds Without Names. In Sea of Revival Shiraishi tackles the gut-wrenching hopelessness that lurks behind love. The film stars actor and former boy band member Shingo Katori (Galaxy Turnpike, The Bastard and the Beautiful World), Naomi Nishida (My Secret Cache, The Journalist) and Yuri Tsunematsu (Bring on the Melody!, Rainbow Days).

Ikuo Kinomoto (Katori) is doing little with his life but is making efforts to quit gambling for the sake of his girlfriend Ayumi (Nishida) who has a teenage daughter Minami (Tsunematsu). They decide to move to Ayumi’s hometown where Ikuo encounters a drunk teacher who happens to be Ayumi’s ex and Minami’s father. Although Ikuo finds a job he gets sucked back into gambling. Then, following an argument with her mother, Minami runs away and later that evening is found murdered.  It appears Ikuo is suspected of causing her death.
