This period drama is an affectionate and nostalgic tribute to Japan’s silent film era at the turn of the twentieth century. Talking the Pictures is directed by the acclaimed and award-winning Masayuki Suo (Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t, Shall We Dance?) and stars model and actor Ryo Narita (The Inerasable, The Antique) and model and actress Yuina Kuroshima (Strayer’s Chronicle, At Home).

Shuntaro Someya (Narita) dreams of becoming a “katsudo benshi”, a beloved performer who provides live narration to silent films. However, he’s fallen in with the wrong crowd who use his talent as a mimic to steal from houses. Giving up his involvement with criminals, he runs away to a small town which is home to a famous theatre. The screenings there are, however, always empty after losing staff and customers to a rival theatre in a neighbouring town. Nevertheless, Shuntaro is excited at the prospect of becoming a respected katsuo benshi.  But it appears there are some obstacles to cross before he can become a true star.
