Maverick Japanese director and animator Masaaki Yuasa (Devilman Crybaby, Super Shiro) is particularly well-known for a distinctively wild and freeform style which reached its antic and manic peak in 2017’s Lu Over the Wall. In his latest outing Ride Your Wave, Yuasa pitches a simple yet enchanting story of love and moving on in a blue ocean of visual poetry.  The fantasy romancer, hailed as Yuasa’s best to date, features a stellar voice cast including actress and former member of idol group AKB48 Rina Kawaei (My Teacher, My Love, Don’t Cry, Mr. Ogre) and singer, dancer and actor Ryota Katayose (My Brother Loves Me Too Much, Prince of Legend).

College girl Hinako Mukaimizu (Kawaei) loves surfing and has a crush on a selfless firefighter Minato Hinageshi (Katayose) who rescues her from her burning apartment. When Minato drowns trying to save someone’s life, their love amazingly survives as he reappears in water whenever Hinako sings a song they often sang together. Slowly, however, she realises that she has to ride her own wave in order to set him free.
