Launched in 1969, the highly popular and much beloved Tora-san series of film comedies celebrates its 50th anniversary with its 50th film Tora-san, Wish You Were Here. Helmed by the veteran director Yoji Yamada (The Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade), the charming crowd-pleaser stars Chieko Baisho (Howl’s Moving Castle), Gin Maeda (The Floating Castle), Hidetaka Yoshioka (The Hidden Blade), Kumiko Goto (City Hunter) and, via flashbacks from earlier films, the late Tora-san legend Kiyoshi Atsumi.

On the sixth anniversary of the death of Mitsuo Suwa (Yoshioka)’s wife, a memorial service is held at Kurumaya, formerly a long-standing traditional confectionery store which has been reborn as a modern café. After the service, Mitsuo, now a successful novelist, recoils at the suggestion he remarry.  However Yuri (Hiyori Sakurada), his daughter, is fine with the idea and even has someone in mind: her father’s perky editor Setsuko (Chizuru Ikewaki).

Soon after, at a book signing, Mitsuo is stunned to see his first love Izumi (Goto), now a United Nations staffer who happens to be on a business trip to Japan. Meeting after the session, the pair share fond memories and with a sense of warmth growing between them, a new chapter in Mitsuo’s life begins.
