Race to Freedom: Um Bok Dong

(자전차왕 엄복동)

This biographical drama is based on the true story of famed Korean cyclist Um Bok-dong who became a symbol of pride for Koreans when he defeated Japanese cyclists during the Japanese colonial rule of the country. Written and directed by Kim Yusung (Hot for Teacher, Three Summer Nights), Race to Freedom stars the hugely popular actor and singer-songwriter Jung Jihoon, better known by his stage name Rain, Min Hyorin (The Grand Heist) and acting legend Tiger Lee (Singles) who also produced the film.

During the Japanese colonial period, Japan hosts the “All Korea Bicycle Races” in order to prove their dominance in the sport and vanquish the pride of the Korean people. However, with the appearance of Um Bok-dong (Jung), the first Korean to defeat top Japanese cyclists, the scheme fails miserably. With his repeated wins Um becomes a national hero who stirs the hearts of Koreans throughout the country to have new hope. Along with attacks from independence fighters the Japanese feel threatened and prepare the ultimate race to stop Um’s winning streak and crush growing Korean morale.
