Synopsis:

Picking up the Special Grand Jury Prize at the 35th Montreal World Film Festival, this beautifully lensed, moving adaptation of Yasushi Inoue’s autobiographical novel recounts the relationship between an author and his elderly mother and his attempt at reconciliation as her memory grows weaker.

Writer Kosaku Igami (Koji Yakusho) has reached the prime of his life: a successful career, devoted wife and three beautiful daughters.  However, he harbours a deep resentment towards his mother.  Raised by his grandfather’s mistress, Kosaku has struggled with feelings of abandonment throughout his life.

Soon after the death of his father, Kosaku’s mother (Kiki Kilin) is diagnosed with dementia and her spells of senility force Kosaku to take her into his care.  As her condition worsens, ironically this mother and son’s relationship begins to reconcile.  Through her fragments of memories and spells of wandering she reveals the truth about her past, allowing Kosako to reconsider his feelings and for his family to draw ever closer to this remarkable woman…
