“Slick, engaging thriller blends cars, crime and characterisation in a fresh way.” - Film Business Asia “Pic features eight driving sequences shot all over Hong Kong, each evoking a distinct sense of place and raising the bar in terms of logistics, visual panache and peril; a climactic, single-take chase along Wan Chai's seafront bears out the film's notion that fluidity is cooler than velocity.” – Variety.com |
| Synopsis: | Johnnie To, Hong Kong’s most prolific of filmmakers produces yet another winner with the high-octane Motorway, considered one of the year’s most technically deft action-thrillers. Helmed by director Soi Cheang Pou-soi, this tightly-paced adventure sees Shawn Yue as a rookie cop, alongside Anthony Wong as his soon-to-retire partner, as they take on a notorious criminal who has escaped capture for over fifteen years. Sean (Shawn Yue) is a brash junior officer in Stealth Riders, an elite police unit that targets fugitives on the run. Jensen (Guo Xiaodong) is a legendary underworld getaway driver, who has avoided arrest throughout his criminal career. When out of the blue Sean comes across Jensen, he thinks his day to shine has finally come. After an arduous car chase, Sean outmaneuvers Jensen and apprehends him. Whilst Sean gloats over his triumphant catch, Jensen escapes custody along with a fellow inmate (Li Haitao). Humiliated by the breakout, Sean seeks out veteran cop Lo (Anthony Wong) who years previous almost lost his life pursuing Jensen. Convincing Lo to embark on one last challenge, will scores eventually be settled? |
