The 1974 hit TV animation is now Japan’s first live-action space battle epic!

This big-budget box office hit breathes new life into the classic TV animation with its sleek, futuristic tones, while preserving the original illustration style of its 1970s predecessor. Directed by visual-effects master Takashi Yamazaki (director of Always Sunset on Third Street), this third top-grossing Japanese movie of 2010 features Takuya Kimura (Hero), Meisa Kuroki (Dance, Subaru!) and Toshiro Yanagiba (Bayside Shakedown).

The year is 2199. Following an attack by the Gamilons, an enemy of undetermined form, the Earth has become so polluted, human life will soon become extinct. With the remaining survivors hiding underground, all hope seems lost. But then, former air force pilot Susumu Kodai (Takuya Kimura) discovers a communications device from a remote planet that is 148,000 light years away. Realizing the distant Iscandar has a solution for eliminating radiation, Kodai assembles a crew and sets off in hope. With one year to go until radiation drives humanity to extinction, Kodai’s great battle has begun.
